He is not someone that you want to mess with unless you want to get your nose bloodied.

A Krav Maga expert and instructor, 3rd Warrant Officer (3WO) (NS) Edwin Peng, 39, was a commando Regular with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

3WO (NS) Peng with fellow commandos during his time as a Regular. He continues to serve as an NSman today.

After serving 11 years with the SAF, he started his own Krav Maga school, teaching self-defence skills to both adults and kids.

Krav Maga is an unarmed combat system that is used by militaries and law enforcement agencies across the world. It aims to neutralise opponents as quickly as possible by targeting the most vulnerable parts of the body.

Watch how 3WO (NS) Peng takes down a knife-wielding "robber" in just a few seconds:

In case you can’t watch the video, here’s an explainer on the demonstration:

1. Escape whenever possible

Civilians practise a milder variant of Krav Maga. It is used to "buy time" to escape, rather than taking down an adversary. In fact, whenever possible, you should always aim to walk away from any confrontation.

2. Attack with kicks

If the attacker is at a distance away from you, instead of moving closer to punch him with your hands, use your legs to strike and put distance between yourself and the attacker. Escape when the attacker is down — remember that the aim is to buy time to escape.

3. Attack with punches

If the attacker has closed in and is already pointing a knife at you, you have little choice but to engage. Grab the attacker's wrist to gain control over the knife, then counterattack with your free hand by striking the attacker (this can be on the face, gut or whichever part of the body is most exposed). Escape when he is down.

Tip for beginners:

"For a start, visit the different Krav Maga schools and attend the trial lessons. Find the right fit, and stick to it. Krav Maga is practical and efficient for defending yourself in real-life situations. You do not need to be ultra-fit to learn the skills, you just need to be committed to practising the martial art." — 3WO (NS) Peng, Director of Krav Maga Global Singapore
