The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) participated in a Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) exercise, codenamed Suman Warrior 2009, from 12 to 19 Aug.

About 65 personnel from the 4th Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (4 SIR) and 260 army personnel from other FPDA member countries, namely Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, participated in the exercise.

Held annually, this year's exercise was hosted by Malaysia in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

The aim of Exercise Suman Warrior is to enhance the interoperability of the FPDA armies. It provides personnel from participating countries the opportunity to train in a multinational environment and enhances their capacities to deal with both conventional and non-conventional threats.

Since its inception in 1971, the FPDA plays an important role in the regional security architecture. The SAF's regular participation in FPDA exercises underscores Singapore s strong commitment to the FPDA.
