The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) are taking part in a bilateral exercise from 16 to 25 Jan.

Codenamed Exercise Eagle, this year's exercise marks an important milestone - it is the 20th in this series since its inauguration in 1974.

Six warships from the RSN and TNI-AL have been deployed for the exercise. The two navies have also contributed one maritime patrol aircraft each for the exercise, which is held once in two years.

However, it will not be all work and no play for the exercise participants. Shore activities such as cultural and sporting events have been planned. These activities foster interaction and further strengthen the camaraderie between the Singaporeans and the Indonesians.

The RSN and TNI-AL have a long history of cooperation, which includes longstanding bilateral arrangements such as the Indonesia-Singapore Coordinated Patrols to combat sea robberies in the Singapore Strait.

These bilateral exercises and interactions underscore the close defence relations between Singapore and Indonesia, and serve to enhance interoperability and mutual understanding between the two navies.
