S PORE AND AUSTRALIA SIGN TRAINING PACT

Singapore and Australia signed an agreement on 22 Aug, which will allow the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to train in Australia for a 45-day period each year from 2005 to 2009.
According to the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), the SAF can deploy up to 6600 personnel and 400 vehicles for brigade-level training at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA) each year.
The SAF conducts Exercise Wallaby annually at the SWBTA, which is approximately 4500 sq km in area.
Supported by the Republic of Singapore Air Force, the Armour and Guards exercise is one of the SAF's largest unilateral training exercises.
Through tough and realistic training in the vast terrain and challenging field environment at the SWBTA, the SAF soldiers' operational readiness has been honed.
The SAF has been training at the SWBTA since 1990.
This is an important element of the excellent defence relationship between Singapore and Australia.
