KEEPING TO TRADITION - MINDEF SHINES IN PUBLIC SERVICE SPORTS CARNIVAL

Servicemen and women from the Singapore Armed Forces who represented the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) in the annual Public Service Sports Carnival (PSSC) have done the ministry proud by winning several trophies.

Led by Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC) Wong Hen Jeng, MINDEF won four of the eight gold trophies for track relay events. Another three MINDEF teams were placed in the top 10 positions in the telematch finals.

In addition, MINDEF's very own cheerleading team claimed a respectable third in its first outing.

"We performed as well as 2004, but in terms of athletic performance and participation, the cohesion and fun, we definitely did better," said LTC Wong.

The well-oiled performance did not come easily. The servicemen and women, who come from various units, had to sacrifice their weekends to train together as a team.

Doing MINDEF proud: SAF ladies clinched several trophies, including two gold.

Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Lim Chock Sing was one who gave up his weekends.

"I would like to commend our MINDEF athletes for putting in extra effort during weekdays to prepare and condition themselves for this carnival," he said.

Eventually MWO Lim's efforts paid off. His 4 x 50 metres relay team clinched a gold trophy for MINDEF.

The PSSC was a good outing for MINDEF, but LTC Wong felt that an even meaningful purpose was achieved.

"Although winning trophies is important, we also wanted to have fun and cohesion among the units," he said.
