They are integral Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) units that have worked side-by-side as one entity in numerous operations such as disaster relief assistance in the 2004 Asian Tsunami and reconstruction missions in the Arabian Gulf.
Now, 191 Squadron, which operates the Landing Ships Tank (LSTs), and 195 Squadron, which operates a range of small craft including the Fast Craft Utility (FCUs), have truly become one after a merger ceromony held on 31 Jul at Tuas Naval Base.
According to Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral (RADM) Ronnie Tay, the impetus for the merger stemmed from the "changing global landscape and the focus on maritime security", with an increasing number of operations involving assets from both squadrons.
"These two types of ship and craft work closely together for mission success," RADM Tay said.
"In fact, the LSTs are designed to receive the fast craft in their well dock, and embark them on board. They are indeed integral with one another."
The merger would create the capacity for a Task Group to be deployed overseas for operational missions and also allow a core leadership to manage more cross-training among the crew, he added.
The two squadrons will effectively come under the banner of the new 191 Squadron, commanded by Colonel (COL) Bernard Miranda, and managed by the Third Flotilla under Headquarters Fleet from 1 Aug.
The new squadron will operate the LSTs, FCUs, Fast Craft for Equipment and Personnel (FCEPs), and Ramp-Powered Lighters.
COL Miranda is looking forward to the increased efficiencies following the merger, as well as more comprehensive training for servicemen.
"By combining the squadrons, the manpower for each LST will increase and the interface between the LST and the craft will improve," he explained.
"The people that serve on the ship will also have more opportunities for personal development and advancement."
195 Squadron was formed 15 years ago, taking over the role of the Port Services Unit to manage the small craft that equipped the RSN with ship-to-shore transport capability. From supporting base activities alone, the squadron had expanded its function to complement the RSN and the Singapore Armed Forces in a wide spectrum of operations.
191 Squadron started off operating the ex-County class LSTs before receiving the four Endurance Class LSTs, the ones currently in service, between 1999 and 2000.
