"I can see too!"

This catchphrase was the unofficial theme of the Integrated Knowledge-based Command and Control (IKC2) Week from 12 to 16 Sep.

Networks will be a key feature of the third-generation Singapore Armed Forces (3g SAF), where real-time information can be shared among units for more responsive decision-making and swift execution of commands.

Some 10,000 Singapore Armed Forces servicemen of all ranks gained a better understanding of what this meant when they took part in a range of activities organised for the IKC2 Week, the core of which were a seminar and an exhibition held at Stagmont Camp.

Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean visited the exhibition on 16 Sep and saw displays of IKC2 experiments that the SAF had successfully fielded, and other experiments which would be operational soon.

The IKC2 Week gave soldiers an opportunity to experience first-hand new technology and to understand the concept behind IKC2.

Colonel Low Jin Phang, Commander Signals Institute, summed up the concept as allowing the SAF to see first, see more; understand faster and better, decide better and faster, and act decisively, so as to bring about a swift victory for the SAF .

In the face of all the cutting-edge technology, the crucial element is still the people. Said Mr Teo: The most important thing, of course, is that we can have all the systems, but the soldier is at the centre of it. And we are fortunate that we have very able and techno-savvy soldiers who are very highly motivated, and this includes regulars, our NSFs as well as our NSmen.

Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, learns the capabilities of the new technology.
Getting up close and personal.
