SAF PEACEKEEPERS RETURN HOME FROM EAST TIMOR

06 Dec 2001

STORY // Felix Siew

After serving a six-month tour of duty with the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), the first platoon of peacekeepers from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) returned home on 6 Dec.

The 64 servicemen were given a warm welcome by Chief of Army, Major-General (MAJ-GEN) Ng Yat Chung, and senior SAF officers at the Paya Lebar Air Base. Also present were the servicemen's family members.

In recognition of their contributions towards the mission, MAJ-GEN Ng presented letters of appreciation to the servicemen.

Singapore has consistently supported the UN in its peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.

A second platoon of peacekeepers left last month to take over the duties of this first platoon.

The SAF's contribution to UNTAET also includes a medical team based at the UN Military Hospital in Dili, and military staff officers in the Peacekeeping Force Headquarters.
