National Service involves a commitment to defence and security, and the personal experience surrounding this commitment.

An exhibition celebrating 40 years of NS will feature this sense of commitment shared by all personnel of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Titled 40 Years of NS Experience, the four-day event at Ngee Ann City's Civic Plaza will be launched by Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean on 12 Apr.

According to Colonel (COL) Ishak Ismail, one of the key challenges in mounting the exhibition was working with the various uniformed services to weave a coherent picture of NS.

"The NS story is about an integrated, interwoven society and the people serving this society," said the deputy chairman of the exhibition committee.

"We didn't want to have each service handling its own portion; that would be the easy way out."

Compressing four decades of achievements into a downtown location, where the exhibition "can reach the general public a lot more than in a camp", was also no mean feat.

About 120 frontline and backstage crew from the SAF, the SPF and the SCDF will manage the exhibition throughout the four days.

To allow more people to view the exhibition, it will be brought on a roadshow to Jurong (21 to 22 Apr) and Tampines (28 to 29 Apr).

40 Years of NS Experience
is the first in a range of activities being organised to commemorate this anniversary.

Others include a 20-episode Mandarin drama serial about the Army, which will air in the second half of this year.
