National Servicemen (NSmen) may soon be given more cash incentives, to reward them for their contributions to Singapore's defence.

Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen said this after a visit to the Basic Combat Training Centre on 14 Nov.

Dr Ng said that as the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) transformed into a third generation (3G) force, more would be required of its key leaders. "The 3G SAF will leverage on new technology, but we need leaders who can explain to the men, lead the men and help them with the technology. We will look into more financial incentives for this group."

NSmen who are not key appointment holders need not fret. There is also a suggestion to give them cash rewards when they complete their NS duties.

These preliminary recommendations were derived from dialogue sessions Dr Ng's committee held with NS commanders, employers of NSmen, NSmen and their wives. The fourth Committee to Recognise the Contribution of Operationally Ready NSmen to Total Defence (RECORD IV) is expected to present its recommendations for the Government's consideration early next year.As part of the committee's ongoing efforts to engage its various stakeholders, more than 50 employers were invited to visit the Basic Combat Training Centre. The employers witnessed NSmen of the 663rd Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment undergoing a chemical defence training exercise. Judging from the attention they paid to the exercise, it was apparent that the visit was a positive experience for the employers.
