SAF BEGINS OPERATIONS IN NZ DISASTER AREA
24 Feb 2011
The command team led by Colonel Melvyn Ong from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) arrived at Christchurch around 8pm (3pm Singapore time) yesterday from Paya Lebar Air Base in a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) KC-135 tanker to lead the 116-strong SAF team already in Christchurch, New Zealand in disaster relief operations.
These servicemen were in New Zealand for a training exercise when the earthquake struck around mid-day on 22 Feb. They are currently assisting the New Zealand Defence Forces' (NZDF's) disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of the 6.3-magnitude quake.
Yesterday, about 50 members of the SAF troops are assisting the NZDF and the local police to cordon off affected areas in downtown Christchurch.
"We are there to ensure the safety of both civilians and relief workers while rescue efforts are ongoing," said Captain (CPT) Satish Seshan, a platoon commander from Headquarters Guards, whose men have been working hand-in-hand with NZDF soldiers in cordon duties.
"Establishing a cordon allows the smooth conduct of rescue operations," added CPT Satish. There have been reports of civilians trying to reach collapsed buildings in order to rescue their loved ones themselves.
The area is still experiencing aftershocks, but official casualty numbers have not increased since the confirmation of 75 deaths yesterday. In a statement given to local news media, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key warned the death toll is likely to rise, even as rescue efforts continue.
A 55-member Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) urban search and rescue team was also part of the morning RSAF flight out to Christchurch. Together, the Singapore contingent departed in two RSAF C-130s and one KC-135 military aircraft.
Following their arrival in Christchurch, the KC-135 evacuated 32 civilians out of the earthquake zone to Auckland, New Zealand.
