The 35-member Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) medical team deployed to Indonesia has set up three tents in Plered, a sub-district of Bantul, in preparation of the work they have been sent to do: the treatment and care of victims of Saturday's killer earthquake.
The team had arrived within 24 hours of the earthquake, on 28 May, and was the first foreign military contingent to reach Bantul.
Bantul, about 10 km away from Yogyakarta, is one of the areas most badly affected by the earthquake.
Despite some rain in the mid-afternoon, the team continued to unload their medical supplies and equipment from the four Republic of Singapore Air Force C-130 transport aircraft which had delivered more than 32 tonnes of humanitarian aid supplies from Singapore on 28 May.
The three SAF tents and two Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) tents have been set up alongside the tents of the TNI field hospital, in an area approximately the size of a football field.
The SAF Mission Commander, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Mohd Ramezan, said the medical team was prepared and well-trained to provide primary health care to victims. The team brought in supplies and equipment to handle various conditions, particularly cases of trauma, fractures and infection.
Upon arrival yesterday, LTC Ramezan and the SCDF commander spent the afternoon inspecting the areas hit by the earthquake to see how best the SAF and the SCDF could assist the Indonesian authorities.
Leader of the medical team, LTC (Dr) Kang Wee Lee, said his team hoped to be able to set up smaller, mobile medical posts closer to Yogyakarta, to bring medical aid even closer to the victims.
The SAF medical team comprises medical officers, nursing officers, paramedics and one public health inspector. Four volunteers - two doctors and two nurses from Sing Health - are also in Indonesia to provide assistance.
Humanitarian assistance supplies including 200 blankets, 60 tents and 300 sleeping bags were flown into Indonesia. This afternoon, another C-130 aircraft arrived at Adisucipto Airbase with seven tonnes of humanitarian aid.
