SAF MDC ALL SET TO SIZZLE THIS NATIONAL DAY
20 Jun 2007
For the first time, visitors to this year's National Day Parade (NDP) can look forward to a one-hour excitement-inducing pre-parade concert.
Featuring local artistes, musicians, performance groups and the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company (SAF MDC), the concert, aptly called Talents Pool, seeks to heighten the joyous mood of the occasion.
Spectators will be kept in high spirits as the concert leads into the parade proper.
Providing a glimpse into what Singaporeans can expect from the concert, Chairman of NDP 2007 Show Committee, Colonel (COL) Alvin Kek revealed: "We have assembled a host of well-loved local talents who will get the spectators singing and moving along with their songs and dance".
Dancers from the SAF MDC will wow the crowds alongside Jai Wahab - a local singer and ex-SAF MDC artiste - in the song item entitled Bunga Sayang or love flower. Incidentally, this song is the creation of local singer, song-writer and composer, Dick Lee, who is also a SAF MDC alumnus.
Artistic Manager of the SAF MDC, Zaini Mohd Tahir who is choreographer and director of the Bunga Sayang performance, feels that "NDP is going to be very exciting this year because of its unique location at Marina Bay".
"Given that the floating platform is surrounded by water, it gives me a lot of creative capacity to choreograph the dance moves and direct the production," he explained.
The Talents Pool concert replaces the usual pre-parade segment of yesteryear.
He added: "It will be different but I think the audience will take it well because it's something new, something edgy and I think this is something Singaporeans want to see". With over 20 dancers backing up Jai, the SAF MDC looks set to kick-start the nation's birthday bash with a bang.
"Last year, we were involved in the post-parade segment but this year, we get to perform in the pre-parade concert which is both exciting and challenging," said full-time National Serviceman (NSF) and SAF MDC artiste, Jackie Ong.
Sharing his sentiments is Hirliana Lynn, a Defence Executive Officer who has been with the Company for more than four years.
"I feel very honoured because we'll be performing for Singaporeans, along with other local artistes and it's not only about dancing, it's also about me enjoying my performance!" she exclaimed.
Former SAF MDC artiste and local theatre actor Sebastian Tan will entertain the crowd with a Chinese song, Dao De Er Zi or Pulau Tekong, in a hip-hop and R n' B version as part of the concert.
Tan, who returned from England recently, expressed delight in being able to participate in the nation's birthday celebrations.
"It feels great to come back home and perform at the NDP where I get to have fun on stage and work with the other artistes who are my friends," he quipped.
Following the SAF MDC's performance at the Marina Bay floating platform, the troupe's artistes will be anchoring a main show at Suntec City's Fountain of Youth. The SAF MDC, together with the other musicians, will entertain the crowd with music, song and dance for four hours.
