After completing several reconstruction projects in Bamiyan province, Afghanistan, a five-man engineering team from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) returned home on 29 Oct.

Led by Lieutenant-Colonel Ong Chia Choong, the SAF personnel were deployed as part of the New Zealand Defence Force s provincial reconstruction team in Jul.

The SAF team supervised the construction of two bridges in the villages of Monara and Chapdara, a culvert project in Regashet, and a water supply project at the Bamiyan University.

During the ceremony to hand over the bridge in Monara, the Governor of Bamiyan expressed his appreciation for Singapore's contribution and thanked the SAF personnel for their efforts.

According to a local official, some 300 families in Monara will benefit from the new bridge.

The engineering team is part of Singapore's contribution to the United Nations-sanctioned international humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.

The SAF had also sent a five-man dental team to Afghanistan to help set up a dental clinic at the Bamiyan Hospital, and to provide dental services to the local community. This team served from May to August.

The well-deserved reunion of LTC Ong and his family.
