The number eight is especially favoured by the Chinese.

Incidentally, this is also the number of times that the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) have participated in Exercise Lion Zeal with the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), since this series of exercises began in 1999.

This year's edition of Lion Zeal, held in Singapore from 16 to 20 Apr, was conducted in two phases.

Visits to various RSN shore training establishments and a planning and tactical gaming exercise at the Tactical Training Centre made up the shore phase.

The sea phase saw both navies tackling maritime security and conventional warfare scenarios together.

Exercise Lion Zeal provides an excellent opportunity for the RSN and the RNZN to enhance mutual understanding. It also promotes interoperability and strengthens professional ties.
