S'PORE BUYS TWO V STERG TLAND SUBS

Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has signed a contract with Kockums AB of Sweden to buy two Vastergotland-class submarines.

The two submarines, expected to enter service from 2010, were evaluated to be a cost-effective opportunity buy that will enhance the submarine capabilities of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).

Also covered in the MINDEF-Kockums AB agreement are a logistics package and comprehensive training in Sweden for the RSN's crews.

As the RSN's current Challenger-class submarines are also of Swedish origin, the Navy will benefit from synergies in both crew training and logistics support.
