Member of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China and Chief of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), General (GEN) Chen Bingde, called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean at the Ministry of Defence on 23 Oct.

GEN Chen's visit marks the first visit by a PLA Chief of General Staff to Singapore and underscores the growing defence ties between both countries following the signing of the Agreement on Defence Exchanges and Security Cooperation in Jan 2008.

As part of his three-day introductory visit to Singapore from 22 to 24 Oct, GEN Chen also called on Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek. He also visited the Changi Naval Base.

The Singapore Armed Forces and the PLA successfully conducted an inaugural joint counter-terrorism training exercise in Guilin, China in June this year. Both armed forces interact regularly through visits, courses, seminars and port calls, which help strengthen mutual understanding and professionalism between personnel of the two armed forces.
