Lasting friendships were forged in the heat of challenging coursework and airtight deadlines at the Singapore Command and Staff College (SCSC).

Just ask the 37th batch of graduates of the SCSC's Command and Staff Course, a gruelling nine-month programme training officers for senior posts in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

During this course, students widened and deepened their knowledge and grasp of military strategy and operations. It also had study trips to Indonesia, Malaysia and India.

Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean presented certificates to the 112 graduates at the Istana on 7 Sep.

"This Command and Staff Course is but a step in your learning process," said Mr Teo in his speech.

"Beyond that, you will have to stay true to the SAF's culture of open-minded learning and explore innovative ideas that work best for the SAF to safeguard Singapore's security and core national interests."

Among the graduates were 12 officers from abroad and a Deputy Superintendent from the Singapore Police Force.

Major (MAJ) Amirul Shanoel Haji Mohd Noeh from the Royal Brunei Navy felt that the course had "a balance of military application and leadership proficiency".

He added: "The officers here have been exceptionally warm, and they have made my stay in Singapore a memorable one."

MAJ Alfred George Fox, the Singapore Army's top graduate, simply found the course "very fun and enriching".

Said the Armour officer by vocation: "It has given me more confidence and has prepared us for dealing with an increasingly complex operational environment."

"Most importantly, we made friends and established networks - people we can call when we need help."

Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC) Chia Chien Wei, the Republic of Singapore Air Force's top graduate, agrees and cherishes "the friendships fostered with officers from the other services and from different countries".
He credits his supportive wife and family for his success in the course, which he described as "very demanding, yet very rewarding".

"There is breadth in its coverage and depth in the assignments," said LTC Chia, who was formerly with the Future Systems Directorate.

"It focuses on thinking and being adaptable, and I think it has prepared us well for our future roles and missions in the SAF."

The course was a first-class experience, says the Royal Brunei Navy's MAJ Amirul Shanoel.
MAJ Alfred Fox finds that the course helped him understand his strengths and weaknesses better.
For LTC Chia Chien Wei, researching and writing papers was an enjoyable part of the course.
