Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral Sumardjono, was conferred the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or Meritorious Service Medal (Military) by Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean on 20 May.

ADM Sumardjono was awarded the medal in recognition of his significant role in strengthening the excellent ties and friendship between the Indonesian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy.

Under his leadership, the relationship between the two navies has grown in scope and depth.

They have regular professional exchange programmes and interactions, and participate in a wide range of bilateral naval exercises, like Exercise Eagle.

Admiral Sumardjono has also continued to support efforts to enhance regional maritime security through the Malacca Strait Patrols, Indonesia-Singapore Coordinated Patrols and bilateral sea surveillance system, codenamed Project SURPIC.

These interactions have enhanced mutual understanding and camaraderie between both navies' personnel.
