It may come as a surprise when Mr Liew Tze Fun, a budget officer at the Naval Logistics Department, says he considers himself the most junior staff in his department. After all, he has been in the department for the past six years.

"Some of my colleagues have been here for more than 10 years. The fact that many of us have been working here for some time just shows how much we love our jobs," he said.

"We find what we do meaningful because we're responsible for ensuring that we only spend on what's required, that money is prudently used down to the very last dollar," he added.

Mr Liew was rewarded for his passion on 24 Jun when he was among 166 Defence Executive Officers (DXOs) and civilian officers promoted at the Civilian Promotion Ceremony.

Permanent Secretary (Defence Development) Dr Tan Kim Siew presented certificates to promoted officers at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) Auditorium.

Ms Vivian Boh, Head of Group 3/Audit Liaison Office in the Internal Audit Department, who was also among those promoted, expressed how she felt about the promotion: "I'm just really grateful... What's more important is that I have been enjoying what I do."

Her job involves auditing processes within MINDEF and the Singapore Armed Forces, and according to her, the toughest part of the job is changing people's perception towards auditors.

She said: "People have this idea that auditors want to find fault, but what we are trying to do is to help improve processes and plug the gaps.

"Over time, units in MINDEF and the SAF (Singapore Armed Forces) have become more receptive towards us, which in turn has helped us to value add to them."

Having been in the Audit Department since 1993, she told cyberpioneer how she has managed to enjoy longevity in her career: "I would say I have the right job fit. My job isn't just about numbers; it involves investigation, and requires me to have an inquisitive mind, and that's what I like about it."

She also credited her boss, Ms Anna Cheng, for her strong sense of direction and drive that never cease to inspire her.

She ended by saying: "To me, remuneration is not the most important factor in a job. It's important to enjoy what you do so that you feel energised coming to work every day."
