CPT (Dr) Chua Jia Long, 27, Head Submarine Medicine Section & Human Performance Section, Naval Underwater Medicine Centre

Captain (CPT) (Dr) Chua Jia Long's interests seem boundless. He signed on in 2011 with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) after receiving the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Medicine Scholarship.

Currently head of the RSN's Submarine Medicine and Human Performance Sections, he deals with medical selection and medical support operations for submariners. He also looks into ways to boost the performance of sailors.

"I enjoy that my work is varied; I can find myself working on different projects throughout the week. This keeps me on my toes and pushes me to utilise my time well."

A fan of outdoor adventures, CPT (Dr) Chua enjoys playing water polo, swimming and hiking. In 2012, he took on the challenge of hiking in Nepal. "Nepal's trails have become quite developed and accessible for tourists, but the altitude can make it difficult for anyone without proper conditioning."

His indoor pursuits hint of adventure too. He started playing table-top role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons about a year ago.

"The games can get intense but the most important aspect is having a group of friends willing to be silly and really get into character. I think we're usually too serious these days, so the game is a welcome change from that."
