A FLYING START TO THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
01 Sep 2006
Hundreds of students from various primary schools had a sneak preview of the Air Force's open house when they visited Paya Lebar Air Base (PLAB) on 1 Sep.
PLAB will be opened to the public on 2 and 3 Sep. There will be a series of static aircraft displays, aerial displays and free rides on board the Air Force's aircraft like the CH-47 Chinook helicopter, Fokker-50 and C-130 planes.
Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC) Lim Boon How, Head of Personnel Centre at PLAB, said the Air Force hoped that this visit would help to generate more interest among the students to pursue a career with the Air Force when they complete their education.
"It is also part of our National Education efforts to get schools to visit us," said LTC Lim, "and to tell them what the Air Force is about and what we do to defend the country."
One of the young visitors, Wan Liang Xiang, 10, had a field day checking out all his favourite military aircraft.
So will he consider joining the Air Force when he is older?
"It's quite interesting to see the different aircraft," he said. "They are very cool and I will be happy to be a pilot."
Some of the students, like Rupert Tan, also had the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter.
"It was very fun and thrilling!" said the student from Catholic High, who is part of his school's Young Aviators Club.
"This is a show not to be missed," he added.
Admission to the open house is free and opening hours are from 10am to 7pm on 2 Sep, and 8.30am to 7pm on 3 Sep. Log on to openhouse.rsaf.gov.sg for more information.
