SHARING KNOWLEDGE ON NAVAL PLATFORM TECHNOLOGY
16 May 2007
More than 500 leading technologists, renowned academics and distinguished naval officers are attending a two-day naval seminar, aimed at promoting knowledge sharing on the latest advancements in naval platform technology.
The Naval Platform Technology Seminar (NPTS) is held in conjunction with the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX) Asia 2007.
The theme of this year's NPTS is "New Environment, New Technologies, New Capabilities" - reflecting the continual drive of the Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to be at the forefront of new defence technologies.
A key focus of the seminar is on the design of future surface and underwater combatants. Participants will discuss developments in stealth technology, weapon systems, combat management systems and platform design. There will also be presentations on new materials developed for shipbuilding and new technologies for machinery condition monitoring.
Some of these new technologies were covered in keynote speeches by Professor Lui Pao Chuen, Chief Defence Scientist, and Rear Admiral (RADM) Anders Grenstad, Navy Inspector of the Royal Swedish Navy, at the opening of NPTS 2007 on 16 May.
Organised by the Republic of Singapore Navy and co-hosted by the Defence Science & Technology Agency and Singapore Technologies Marine, the seminar was officially opened by Permanent Secretary (Defence) Chiang Chie Foo.
A biennial event since 2001, the NPTS will continue to serve as a catalyst for collaborative international research and development effort.
