Having successfully completed an extensive series of sea trials, the entry of the last two Formidable-class stealth frigates - RSS Stalwart and RSS Supreme - into active service marks a significant milestone for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).
With the entire fleet of frigates now fully operational, this completes the final phase of the Frigate Programme, which began in 2000, when the Ministry of Defence signed a technology transfer agreement with naval defence company, DCNS. The lead ship RSS Formidable, was designed and constructed in France, while the the other five were built locally by ST Marine.
In his opening address during the commissioning ceremony of the final two frigates on 16 Jan, Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral (RADM) Chew Men Leong said that the frigates act as a significant force multiplier, forming an integral component of the 3rd Generation Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
"Collectively, the frigate squadron will provide a strong capability edge in the air, surface and sub-surface dimension... and serve as key nodes in the SAF war-fighting network," he said.
Equipped with advanced weaponry like the Aster surface-to-air missiles, and sophisticated sensors such as the Multi-Function Radar, the range and reach of the frigates will be further extended with the upcoming integration of the Sikorsky S-70 naval helicopters.
Helicopter crew have been training in San Deigo, California, since November 2007, and RSS Stalwart will be joining them for six months in the later half of the year, to undergo integration training.
With its full fleet of six frigates now operational, 185 Squadron's role in maritime security and protecting Singapore's sea lines of communication is greatly enhanced.
During the commissioning ceremony held at Changi Naval Base, Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean pointed out the increasing need for regional and international cooperation in maritime security.
Citing examples such as the Malacca Strait Patrol and the establishment of ReCAAP (Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia), Mr Teo pointed out how Singapore takes an active role in "developing concepts, ideas and models for cooperation in anti-piracy efforts".
"This is a critical mission as the lion's share of Singapore's trade is conducted by sea," he added.
With their longer range and reach, the frigates will be a significant boost to the RSN's ability in fulfilling its key mission of ensuring Singapore's seaward defence and the security of her surrounding waters.

With the full operationalisation of the frigate squadron, the RSN's naval capabilities will be greatly enhanced in the protection of the regional maritime domain.
