About 130 grassroots leaders joined several Members of Parliament at the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Open House 2006 on 3 Sep.
Minister of State for Defence, Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee, hosted this visit to Paya Lebar Air Base as part of the Singapore Armed Forces' outreach tours of its military camps.
Assoc Prof Koo also chaired a dialogue session with a panel, including Chief of Air Force Brigadier-General Ng Chee Khern.
Besides viewing the exhibition hall, guests saw the RSAF's latest aircraft in rousing action during the 45-minute aerial display.
Among the visitors who enjoyed the air show was Ms Indranee Rajah, Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs.
Noted the MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC: "Today's show revealed the impressive array of weaponry acquired by the RSAF."
"But, more importantly, it underscores the need for good men and women to maintain our Air Force as a deterrent force that can help the nation win a decisive victory."
While the noise from military aircraft remains a concern among grassroots leaders, Ms Indranee thinks it is a small price to pay for the country's sovereignty.
"It is necessary if we want to maintain our independence and our freedom," she said, "but because of it, we can stand tall and free."
After visiting this year's open house, grassroots leader Azman Mohamad feels that he can "sleep better" as he is "confident that our skies are being protected".
"If there are any issues regarding the noise," said the member of Pasir Ris West Citizens' Consultative Committee, "I can better explain the situation to residents."
He added: "As the Chief of Air Force had mentioned during the question-and-answer session, the sound of our airplanes is the sound of freedom."
