There's a new app in town which gives national servicemen the freedom to manage their annual Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) on the go, and more of such NS-related apps are in the pipeline.
Every year, combat-fit Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) are required to pull up, sit up, jump, sprint and run in the name of staying fit to defend Singapore.
With the MyIPPT mobile app launched on 24 May, they can now do this more easily as they will be able to manage their IPPT, IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT) and Remedial Training (RT) bookings on the go. The app also aims to be a comprehensive fitness companion with features that allow users to message fellow NSmen to organise training sessions as well as track and monitor their progress.
Useful IPPT-related information such as score tables and past IPPT performance records can be found within the app, once users input their personal details. There's even an IPPT calculator which tells users if they are on track for that Gold award.
"One of the great things about this app is having the IPT training programmes right in your hands, which you can execute on the spot instead of having to download them from the NS portal website," said Lieutenant (LTA) (NS) Amos Goh from Headquarters 6th Singapore Division, who was part of a user-trial study conducted prior to the launch.
With such easy access to the IPT workouts, NSmen are able to train using the same programmes used at IPT sessions, in their own time. Just set your prescribed IPT target and the app pulls out a detailed list of exercises. Follow the workouts regularly and you might just be able to attain your Personal Performance Targets within the stipulated time frame!
Fitness buddy
Training tools can be found in the in-app feature called Fitness Tracker, which gives NSmen easy access to their personal fitness targets and allows them to manage their workouts. Those who need more motivation to train can even call up other users via the Nudge Buddy feature to organise impromptu training sessions. Think Whatsapp messenger (the popular instant messaging app for smartphones) but with a fitness-focused twist.
Can't find anyone to train with you? It's okay. Use the in-app music player to configure playlists during a workout and exercise along to your music.
After sweating it out, use the in-app sharing feature to post your workout on the popular social website Facebook or the social media platform tailored for NSmen, NS Connect, and make your friends feel bad for not joining you.
Those who have trouble remembering when they are due for their next IPPT-related sessions can take comfort in knowing that the app imports these important dates into their phone's calendar.
"We developed the app with the aim of allowing NSmen to execute their IPPT transactions anytime, anywhere. We want to partner NSmen to inculcate a 'stay fit' culture," said Major (MAJ) Bobby Tan from the NS Information Technology Branch, HQ Personnel Command.
"One of the biggest challenges was making the app intuitive and accessible. Over the last half year, we've tested the app intensively to ensure that it works," he added.
Looks like all the hard work has paid off. Said LTA (NS) Goh: "Besides being able to book IPPT-related sessions while I'm on the go, the app is useful because it is pretty intuitive and navigating the menu and option screens is easy."
More apps
Since its launch on 24 May, developers have been looking at enhancing the MyIPPT app, such as providing workout tips through pictures and videos. Although the MyIPPT app is currently available only for the Apple iPhone, the Android version of the app is in the works. It is slated to be available by the end of 2012.
Other e-Services currently found on NS Portal will also make their way into smartphones. Other apps covering NS-related transactions, such as Call-Ups, Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) Notification Centre and eSelf-Update, will progressively be made available for iPhones and Android-based devices over the coming year.
For example, the MyCallup app will host electronic versions of the NS notification SAF100 document and users will be alerted of any call-ups through the app. Apart from being able to acknowledge the call-up via in-app features, users can view the venue and a map of the call-up location, and forward details of their NS training periods to their employers.
With the MINDEF Notification Centre app, NSmen will be able to inform their units of overseas travel plans, as well as amend and cancel their submitted notifications. Those travelling for periods over six months will be able to apply for exit permits with ease using the Exit Permit app.
The eSelf-Update app will replicate the NS Portal functions and allow NSmen to update MINDEF of changes to their personal particulars. Other apps will allow NSmen to manage Manning periods, view their NS attendance and interact with their unit mates.
With so much being done to ensure greater convenience for NSmen, juggling work and NS duties just got easier.
