Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean conferred the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or Meritorious Service Medal (Military) on the Australian Chief of Army of the Australian Defence Force, Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Kenneth J. Gillespie, at the Ministry of Defence on 29 Apr.

LTGEN Gillespie received the prestigious military award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in strengthening bilateral ties between the armies of Singapore and Australia.

LTGEN Gillespie has been supportive of the Singapore Armed Forces' training in Australia for Exercise Wallaby, conducted annually in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area.

Under his leadership, the Australian Army and the Singapore Army have cooperated closely in the multinational reconstruction efforts in Oruzgan, Afghanistan.

Such interactions have further strengthened the interoperability and sharing of knowledge between the two armed forces, and deepened the close and long-standing defence relationship between both countries.

During his three-day visit to Singapore, LTGEN Gillespie called on Mr Teo as well as Chief of Defence Force Major-General Neo Kian Hong and Chief of Army Brigadier-General Chan Chun Sing. He also visited the Murai Urban Training Facility.
