A CLEAR AND STEADFAST VISION FOR 9TH DIVISION
12 Feb 2009
9th Division (9 DIV) may have undergone a change of command on 23 Jan, but at heart, its vision remains a clear and steadfast constant.
Outgoing commander and Chief Infantry Officer Brigadier-General (BG) Chan Chun Sing and his successor, Colonel (COL) Lim Hock Yu, share a similar vision for 9 Div and the army at large - progression through unity and teamwork.
During the change of command parade at Selarang Camp, BG Chan expounded: "We are just ordinary people trying to achieve extraordinary things. What sets us apart is teamwork."
He cited the example of the testing for the new SAF combat uniforms where input was received from all levels. Feedback from the specialist corps aided in determining the material and design of the new combat fatigues. Both its functionality and durability were borne out of the laborious efforts of various parties.
A firm believer in the need for trust and understanding as a means to engender positive teamwork, BG Chan expressed the need to savour the journey and not the end point alone.
COL Lim echoed his predecessor's sentiments and feels that only through the fostering of a mutual understanding between men and commanders can 9 Div be at it sharpest at all times.
As for the way ahead, he hopes to continue to enhancing the capability of the division and to leverage on technology. In addition, he expressed the need to continue emphasising on training for servicemen, so that they can then become "a part of this evolving 3rd Generation Army".
COL Lim joined the SAF on 19 Jun 1984 and has made invaluable contributions to the SAF through his numerous command and principal staff appointments, which include Commanding Officer (CO) 6th Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (6 SIR), Deputy Assistant Chief of General Staff (Current Ops), Deputy Chief Infantry Officer and Assistant Chief of the General Staff (Intelligence).
BG Chan joined the SAF on 21 December 1987 and has assumed the appointment of Chief of Staff, Joint Staff (COS-JS).
