DO IT BETTER, MAKE IT FUN
06 Nov 2012
In his previous role as a signals instructor in the Infantry Training Institute (ITI), 2WO Kelly Yeo trained Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) signallers in the infantry and guards battalions on the use of signals equipment. He also prepared them for their ATEC (Army Training Evaluation Centre) evaluation.
To help the NSmen make the most of their time during In-Camp Training (ICT), he developed a Quick Reference Guide a manual with step-by-step instructions that help refresh the NSmen's knowledge of signals equipment and processes. 2WO Yeo also produced a set of materials that comprise documents such as radio net diagrams, line circuit diagrams and store lists to facilitate NSmen's ICT, which is still in use today.
But the most important thing, said the 33-year-old, is to be there with the men, an effort not lost on those he trained. Two NSmen platoons wrote in to commend 2WO Yeo's unflagging commitment, and he continues to be a role model for the younger soldiers.
2WO Kelly Yeo
Staff Officer, Army Information Centre
"He leads by example. What I admire about him is he came down to do 5BX (five basic exercises) with the guys in the company at 5.30am every day," said 1st Sergeant Wee Xiang Kun, a platoon 2nd-In-Charge at the 10th Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (10 C4I) battalion, where 2WO Yeo was Company Sergeant Major from 2010 to January this year.
Currently a staff officer in the Army Information Centre, 2WO Yeo has had to adapt to another change from being a hands-on guy to someone who has to analyse and think from a wider perspective.
Even though the learning curve is steep, 2WO Yeo enjoys taking on the challenges of his latest appointment: "It has allowed me to see the bigger picture. So when you next go to the ground it puts you in a better position to explain to the men what the leadership is thinking about."
