CELEBRATING THE SINGAPORE SPIRIT
08 Jul 2008
Elaborate feather costumes, artistic Silat fighting movements, funky hip-hop dance steps and a bold new Merlion dance sequence.
These are just some of the items spectators will get to see during the exciting Show segment of National Day Parade (NDP) 2008.
Aptly titled 'Shine! Singapore Spirit', the Show will feature almost 3,000 performers, and spectators can look forward to a visual feast of colourful costumes and be entertained by the exciting line-up of Show items.
Chairman of the NDP 2008 Show Committee, Colonel (COL) Tay Boon Khai, said: "Singapore is a city of possibilities because of us Singaporeans, and the spirit of all of us."
This will be brought across in three dynamic acts, which will portray various elements of the Singapore Spirit, before the Show ends with a spectacular grand finale.
The first act, Search! Pioneers of a New Age, will pay tribute to the courage and adventurous spirit of our forefathers. Next, performances in Sense! Artists of a New Landscape will showcase our youthful creativity and vision for the future, while Spring! Creators of a New World will express Singaporeans' adaptable and flexible nature.
In the finale, all the Show performers will come back on stage for a thrilling climax as local singers Hady Mirza and Joi Chua take to the stage with a rendition of the NDP 2008 theme song 'Shine for Singapore'.
Flashy costumes and breathtaking fireworks displays aside, COL Tay emphasised that the Show segment is more than just the usual extravaganza of choreographed movements and pyrotechnics.
Hopefully Singaporeans will be inspired by the Show, which is the result of countless hours of preparation and collaboration by the organisers and performers, he said.
COL Tay is also looking to bring out the star in every individual.
"I think the highlight of any NDP, and especially NDP 2008, must be the people," he said.
"Each and every one of them deserves to be a star in NDP 2008."
