Emeritus Professor Ang How Ghee has become the first local recipient of the Singapore Defence Technology Distinguished Fellowship.

An advisor to both the DSO National Laboratories (DSO) and the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), Professor Ang received the award from Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence on 10 Jan.

Chief Defence Scientist, Professor Lui Pao Chuen, praised Professor Ang for his "dedicated and selfless service" and his significant role in establishing a solid foundation in chemical defence for Singapore in the late 1980s.

Professor Lui said:"Professor Ang drew up the master plan to develop chemical defence capability. He visited overseas institutions and established close collaborations with partners to jump-start our chemical defence research."

"Professor Ang was also instrumental in persuading the best students to take on chemical defence as their research career, and he was also personally involved in the training of our fledgling chemical defence scientists."

Speaking about the award, Professor Ang said he was overwhelmed: "It is something very special to me and I will treasure it. It also gives me new energy into the next phase of my programme in defence research."

He revealed that his current research work included the better detection of improvised explosives as well as a greater understanding of chemical and biological agents to prevent terrorists from using them.
