The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is taking part in a major Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) joint exercise from 8 to 24 Oct.

Codenamed Bersama Lima 2008, this year's exercise involves air, maritime and land forces conducting combined and joint operations in a multi-threat environment.

Held in Malaysia and the South China Sea, a total of 18 ships, 61 aircraft and other supporting elements from Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom, are taking part in the exercise.

This 17-day exercise aims to strengthen interoperability and mutual cooperation among the armed forces of the FPDA nations. Exercise highlights include operational-level planning and table-top exercises ashore, as well as maritime interdiction operations and air defence exercises.

Officiating the exercise opening ceremony at Sungei Petani, Kedah, on 13 Oct was Malaysia's Chief of Defence Forces, General Tan Sri Abdul Aziz bin Haji Zainal.

The closing ceremony, which will be held on 24 Oct, will be officiated by the SAF's Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek.
