Once upon a time, there was a planet populated by beans. This planet was heading for catastrophe as it was moving towards the sun rapidly.
The beans thought hard about how to stop the crash. They decided to jump at the top of the planet to force it downwards, hence preventing collision with the sun.
They shouted 1-2-3, jumped in unison and ...
This unusual story is the brainchild of a team of students from CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School.
The team, consisting of Karen Wong, Jacqueline Lie, Angeline Chua and Chew Shu Ling, was among the top 10 teams in N E mation!, a Total Defence animation competition for secondary schools.
The competition served as a platform for youths to express their personal notions about Total Defence through 60-second animations that will be screened throughout Singapore.
"The morale of our story is to show the importance of team cohesion and working hard towards a common goal," said Angeline about their story, entitled "Jumping for Joy".
"It's quite fun to do animation but it's tiring, too! We had to wake up so early and go home so late," lamented Jacqueline before bursting into giggles.
To qualify to for the top 10, the girls had to skip one week's lessons to learn animation at Nanyang Technological University's School of Art, Media and Design.
Like the girls from St Nicholas, the team from National Junior College (NJC) also enjoyed themselves, participating in N E mation!
"This is a special and unique experience for us," said Estella Ng, 15. "How often are students given such a chance to learn animation and do something fun?"
Themed "Kacang putih, a mixture of nuts; Singapore, a mixture of hearts", the NJC team told their story using the all-time favourite local movie snack.
"We came up with this story within a day or two, because our previous story had to be scrapped as it was too long and too hard to animate," said Gillian Daniel.
Her team-mate, Nurul Amalina added: "We learned through this experience that teamwork is very important and that we must learn to accept people's ideas."
, Deputy Principal of Hwa Chong International School (HCIS), was at NTU to give encouragement to the HCIS team.
"This is a very interesting way and National Education values come alive for the students," she said.
"They get to internalise the values, compared to being taught the values in a classroom, which ends up being dictatorial."
Voting for the best animation clip will start on 14 Feb next year. Votes can be cast on www.nemation.sg
