The National Day Parade (NDP) 2017 will be held at the Marina Bay floating platform, announced Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen.

"Each (NDP) site has its unique charm and fans among Singaporeans... (and) we (MINDEF/SAF) have decided to hold NDP 2017 at the floating platform," Dr Ng said, noting that the floating platform had become a favourite among many Singaporeans as it allowed audiences to come up close to the parade's air, land and sea elements. The NDP was last held there in 2014.

Dr Ng was speaking at the NDP 2016 Appreciation Function at the Bay Sands Convention Centre on 18 Aug, where he hosted a dinner to thank key appointment holders of the NDP 2016 organising committee, participating organisations and sponsors for their support and contributions.

A bold new approach

NDP 2016 was a parade known for many firsts: it was held for the first time at the newly-built National Stadium and was seen "live" by a record number of 275,000 spectators over two National Education shows, two Previews and actual-day parade.

Taking advantage of the venue's high domed roof, the parade featured large aerial props that moved around the stadium, as well as 26 aerialists who performed stunts and dance routines in the air.

The parade also featured a song signing segment which had audiences hand-signing along to popular NDP songs Home and Count on Me, Singapore. In addition, indoor fireworks were used for the first time.

In his speech, Dr Ng lauded the organising committee for taking a bold approach to the parade and show segments: "Together, all of you have broken new ground with your energy and bold ideas. And as a result, people...are saying, 'Oh, I have new favourites!'"

Highlighting that some had dubbed this year as "their best NDP ever", he acknowledged the efforts of all who were involved in making it a successful and memorable parade, including Muslim participants who underwent training and rehearsals while fasting during the month of Ramadan.

"One of the main reasons why this was a success is because of your hard work, your sacrifices (and) your generous contributions. Without that, I don't think it could have been a resounding success," Dr Ng said.

"So let me thank you on behalf of all Singaporeans who have thoroughly enjoyed this year's NDP and its festivities - our inaugural NDP at the new National Stadium."

During the event, Dr Ng also presented certificates of appreciation to Gold award recipients to thank them for their contributions. This year, a total of 191 recipients received the Gold award, including NDP 2016 Chairman Executive Committee Brigadier-General (BG) Kenneth Liow.

Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General (LG) Perry Lim will present the Silver award to 604 recipients at a separate dinner event later this week.
