The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) marked Singapore's 50th birthday and SAF50 with the commissioning of a memorabilia-packed time capsule on 6 Aug.

The first time capsule to be commissioned in MINDEF, the 40cm by 150cm cylindrical stainless steel container will preserve special moments for future generation.

The time capsule contained about 800 items contributed by MINDEF personnel.

Notable items included the SAF50 commemorative book, SG50 and SAF50 memorabilia, and photographs of MINDEF's present surroundings. It also contained notes addressed to future MINDEF office holders by their present counterparts.

Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen sealed the time capsule at the National Day Observance Ceremony held at MINDEF. He was joined by Minister of State for Defence Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, together with senior MINDEF and SAF officers.

The time capsule will be displayed at the exhibition area on level one of the MINDEF building. It will be opened in August 2065 when Singapore turns 100.

Deputy Secretary (Administration) Han Neng Hsiu said the time capsule reflects MINDEF/SAF's confidence in Singapore.

"We selected meaningful items that would enable future generations of MINDEF/SAF personnel to better appreciate the achievements in the first 50 years and the progress that will be made in the next 50 years."

At the ceremony, Dr Ng led about 2,500 personnel, including Service Chiefs and senior officials, to recite the pledge and sing the national anthem.

All SAF units, including overseas training detachments, will also be holding observance ceremonies to celebrate National Day.
