Navy serviceman Military Expert (ME) 2 Jason Chee marked another milestone in his recovery when he met his idol Nick Vujicic on 7 Sep.
ME2 Chee had lost both his legs and his left arm in an accident in December 2012 and Mr Vujicic's life story of not letting being born without limbs stop him from achieving his dreams has been great motivation for him. The two met up at Mr Vujicic's sold-out event held at the Star Vista, along with former national shooter Aishah Samad who lost all four limbs to a bacterial infection in 2012.
Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, who met the trio before the talk, said that ME2 Chee was an inspiration to all, and added: "I think they (the trio) are a wonderful encouragement and role models to those who have disabilities and went through adversity."
He also said: "I'm very glad that Jason is completely in high spirits and very happy that he is making tremendous progress."
According to Dr Ng, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has been in contact with overseas medical specialists to explore further aids in ME2 Chee's recovery. The SAF currently assists by providing mobility aids and taking care of his medical needs.
As part of Mr Vujicic's motivational talk to a 5,000-strong crowd, ME2 Chee and Ms Aishah joined him on stage for a chat.
During the 45-minute segment, ME2 Chee asked about Mr Vujicic's favourite sports and the latter's marriage. He also let on that he was in a relationship now. In response, Mr Vujicic let out a spontaneous congratulatory yelp before a huge grin broke across his face.
Said ME2 Chee: "I see a lot of inspirational people, like Nick. If he can do it, I also want to be like him."
"If I think negative and give up, what will happen to the people (around me). I just want to do my best."
Nothing is going to stop ME2 Chee from getting back on his feet, and he is already looking beyond that. He hopes to return to work in the Republic of Singapore Navy as soon as he can and represent Singapore in table tennis and shooting at the 2016 Paralympic Games.
