Tens of thousands of Singaporeans gathered on 2 Aug for the National Day Parade (NDP) Preview, the very last NDP run prior to the actual parade on National Day.

The red T-shirts that many wore to the event in support of the nation's colours reflected the burning desire of the crowds to be part of the celebration.

They turned out in full force, thronging the Marina Bay floating platform, as well as the areas surrounding it.

Madam Ee Chew Poh and her husband, Mr Siow Wee Teck, came dressed for the occasion, and were thrilled at being part of the NDP experience. The couple "enjoyed everything" and were most excited to see the Red Lions' freefall performance.

Another spectator, 60-year-old Madam Ng Nui Eng, was enthralled by the joint display from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Home Team.

"Their polished performance shows that they"ve gone through tough training and come out better for it," she said, expressing her delight at being present at last year's NDP, too.

Eight-year-olds, Shayne Low and Cheyenne Koh, just couldn't wait for the fireworks display.

The atmosphere carried on beyond the decks of the floating platform. Thousands were gathered around areas such as the Merlion Park to witness the Black Knights' aerial display as well as the fireworks.

Among them was 17-year-old Sherman Tan, who summed up his feelings about the show: "That's hot!"

The designers of this year's NDP envisioned a parade that was not just a parade, but an interactive theatre experience. For that to occur required the involvement of both the spectators and the performers.

Viknesh from the SAF Music and Drama Company (MDC) certainly intended to help the audience get as much out of the show as they possibly could. As part of the acappella ensemble accompanying Jacintha Abisheganaden's performance, the 20-year-old had attended rehearsals for the past two months.

Despite the commitment, he was no less enthusiastic than any other performer, and was thankful for the precious exposure that such an event allowed.

Such enthusiasm was echoed by his fellow performer, teenager Nathan Hartono, who did a rendition of 'Where I belong' with a multinational children's choir.

"Hoorah", he replied, when asked about his being part of such a momentous event.

A magnificent performance that brought together Singaporeans from all walks of life - truly a celebration of the Singapore Spirit.
